May 2022 - ACAL Returns to VSS After two long years of COVID and remote conferences, ACAL is returning to St. Pete's Beach for the Annual Meeting of the Vision Sciences Society. Jessica, Elisabeth, and Genna will all be presenting. It's been a long time coming and we are all excited to get back to VSS. 'nuff said! October 2021 - Applied Cognition and Aging Lab Recieves Two Grants The Applied Cognition and Aging Lab was recently awarded two grants. The first award is a collabortive grant with colleagues from the UCF Departments of Psycholgy, Modeling and Simulation, and Enginerring, and the College of Medicine from the National Science Foundation. The second award is a collaborative grant with colleagues here in the Department of Psychology and from the Department of Modeling and Simulation and Department of Industrial Engineering from the Florida Department of Transportation. The grants will fund a variety of research activities for the next several years. August 2021 - UCF IMMERSE Opens for Research May 2020 - Congratulations to Dr. Dawn Sarno Congratulations to Dr. Dawn Sarno who successfully, and in outstanding fashion, offically defended her dissertation and has now completed all requirements for the PhD. We are all incredibly depressed that Dawn will be leaving us, but we are also excited to continue collaborating as she moves to her new position as an Assistant Professor at Clemson University. Unfortunately, COVID ruined graduation this year, but the next time we all meet again at VSS we will need to have an ACAL hoody ceremony to make up for our missed celebration of Dawn's accomplishments. August 2019 - Genna Telschow Joins ACAL The Applied Cognition and Aging Lab welcomes new PhD student. Genna Telschow. Genna joins the lab from Berry Univerity and is interested in pretty much everything (she'll fit in perfectly!). We are are excited to have her here! August 2019 - Applied Cognition and Aging Lab Recieves Grant from DoD October 2018 - Applied Cognition and Aging Lab Recieves Two Grants The Applied Cognition and Aging Lab was recently awarded two grants. The second award is with colleagues here in the Department of Psychology from the National Eye Institute at the National Institutes of Health. The grants will fund a variety of research activities, equipment purchases, and graduate students for next several years. August 2018 - Jessica Nguyen and Elisabeth Slifkin Join ACAL The Applied Cognition and Aging Lab welcomes two new PhD students. Jessica Nguyen joins the lab from UC Davis, and Elisabeth Slifikin from George Washington University. We are excited to have you both! April 2018 - Congratulations to Dr. Joanna Lewis Congratulations to Dr. Joanna "Banana" Lewis who successfully, and in outstanding fashion, offically defended her dissertation and has now completed all requirements for the PhD. Having Joanna in the lab has been incredible and she will be sorely missed. We wish her all the best as she moves on to the Universtiy of Northern Colorado where she will be an Assistant Professor. November 2017 - Congratulations to Dr. Ada Mishler Congratulations to Dr. Ada Mishler who successfully, and in outstanding fashion, offically defended her dissertation and has now completed all requirements for the PhD. Ada has been an outstanding student and we look forward to watching as she takes the next steps in her career. We will miss you, Ada! October 2017 - Ada Mishler Publishes New Paper Applied Cogntion and Aging Lab graduate student, Ada Mishler, had her paper titled, "Absence of distracting information explains the redundant signals effect for a centrally presented categorization task" accepted for publication in Acata Psychologica. Nice job, Ada! August 2017 - Joanna Lewis and Dawn Sarno Have Papers Accepted to HFES Applied Cogntion and Aging Lab graduate students, Joanna Lewis and Dawn Sarno both had Proceedings and Talks accepted to the annual meeting of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. Way to go! May 2017 - ACAL Presents at VSS Lab graduate students all presented their work at the Annual Meeting of the Vision Sciences Society in St. Pete Beach, Florida. Alyssa, Dawn, and Ada all gave poster presentations while Joanna gave a talk. Great job all around! May 2017 - Congratulations to Dr. Alyssa Hess Congratulations to Dr. Alyssa Hess who officially completed her doctoral work and graduated! She now moves on to Nuance where she will work as a Voice Design Researcher. We wish Alysaa all the best - you will be missed! February 2017 - Joanna Lewis Publishes New Paper Lab graduate student, Joanna Lewis, published a new paper titled, "Designing werable technology for an aging population" in Ergonomics in Design. The paper spells out specific guidlines for designing mobile technology with older adult users in mind. Congratulations, Joanna! November 2016 -Ada Mishler Publishes New Paper Applied Cogntion and Aging Lab graduate student, Ada Mishler, published a new paper titled, "Improving wayfinding for older users with selective attention deficits" in Ergonomics in Design. This important paper calls out the need for develping signage that considers the attentional deficits that often occur as we age so as to improve independence and wellness in older populations. Excellent work, Ada! August 2016 - Joanna Lewis Publishes New Paper Applied Cogntion and Aging Lab graduate student, Joanna Lewis, had her paper titled, "Through the Google Glass: The Impact of Heads-Up Displays on Visual Attention" accepted for publication in Cognitive Research: Principles and Implications. Nice job, Joanna! April 2016 - Sofia Neira Receives Honorable Mention ACAL undergraduate lab manager, Sofia Neira, received an Honorable Mention at the University of Central Florida Showcase of Undergraduate Research Excellence for her poster titled, "Perceptual grouping by closure in visual working memory." Congratulations, Sofia! March 2016 - Alyssa Hess Wins Award for Best Graduate Student Presentation Applied Cognition and aging lab graduate student, Alyssa Hess, recieved the award for Best Graduate Student Presentation at the 2016 Human Factors & Applied Psychology Student Conference for her talk titled, "Characterizing cognitive differences between novice and expert video game players." Congratulations, Alyssa! March 2016 - Mark Neider Receives Two Awards Lab Director, Mark Neider, received two highly competitive awards from the University of Central Florida. The 2016 UCF Research Incentive Award recognizes excellence in research endeavors and the 2016 UCF Teaching Incentive Program Award recognizes excellence in teaching and mentoring. March 2016 - Alyssa Hess Publishes New Paper Applied Cogntion and Aging Lab graduate student, Alyssa Hess, had her paper titled, "On the hunt: Visual search for camouflaged targets in realistic environments" accepted for publication in PLoS ONE. Way to go, Alyssa! March 2016 - Sofia Neira Accepted to UNC PREP Program ACAL undergraduate lab manager, Sofia Neira, has been accepted to the highly competitive Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Congratulations, Sofia! July 2015 - Joanna Lewis Publishes New Paper Applied Cogntion and Aging Lab graduate student, Joanna Lewis, had her paper titled, "Fixation Not Required: Characterizing Oculomotor Attention Capture for Looming Stimuli," accepted for publication in Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics. Congrats, Joanna! April 2015 -Mark Neider Receives Dean's Rising Star Award Lab Director, Mark Neider, recieved the UCF College of Science's Dean's Rising Star Award. ACAL graduate student, Ada Mishler, immediately declares that the sky has fallen. April 2015 - Ada Mishler Wins Award for Outstanding Research ACAL graduate student, Ada Mishler, recieved the award for Outstanding Overall Research at the 2015 Human Factors & Applied Psychology Student Conference for her talk titled, "Redundant Signals in the Triple Conjunction Effect." Congratulations, Ada! March 2015 - Sofia Neira Accepted to NSF REU Program ACAL undergraduate lab manager, Sofia Neira, has been accepted to the highly competitive National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates Summer program at the University of Vermont. As part of the program, Sofia will spend her summer in Vermont doing research related to Cognitive Neuroscience. Congratulations, Sofia! January 2015 -Applied Cognition and Aging Lab Recieves Grant from ONR Lab Director, Dr. Mark Neider, recieved a grant award from the Office of Naval research. This award will support ongiong research related to visual search in realsitc contexts. June 2014 - Applied Cognition and Aging Lab Recieves Two Grants Lab Director, Dr. Mark Neider, with collaborators from other labs at UCF, recently recieved grants from the National Institutes of Health and Department of Defense. These awards will support new lines of research and a number of graduate student researchers over the next several years. April 2014 - ACAL Graduate Student Awarded NSF Graduate Fellowship Applied Cogntion and Aging Lab graduate student, Joanna Lewis, was awarded a 2014 Graduate Student Fellowship from the National Science Foundation. The award is among the most prestigous available to graduate students and is highly competitive. Joanna's award is one of only 11 made nationwide in the cognitive psychology domain. The award provides 3 years of very generous stipend support, tuition support, and access to many opportunities made available through the National Science Foundation. Congratulations to Joanna for this wonderful accomplishment! April 2014 - ACAL Graduate Student Recieves Grant from LIFE @ UCF Applied Cogntion and Aging Lab graduate student, Joanna Lewis, and Lab Director, Dr. Mark Neider,recieved a 2014 Richard Tucker Gerontology Applied Research Award from LIFE @ UCF. The funding will be used to support studies on mitigating age-related declines in attention. Congratulations to Joanna! March 2014 - ACAL Graduate Student Awarded Outstanding Poster Award Applied Cogntion and Aging Lab graduate student, Alyssa Hess, recieved an Outstanding Poster Award at the 2013 Human Factors & Applied Psychology Student Confernece for her poster titled, "Hide and Seek: Searching for Poorly Defined Real World Targets."
